２００３年ごろ、富士宮市の養豚業者がペット用のミニブタを開発する過程で、突然変異により極小ミニブタが誕生。センターと富士マ社は、クローン技術を駆使しながら極小ミニブタとヨーロッパ系の既存ミニブタを交配し、１０年１１月に極小ミニブタのオス、メスの原種の安定的な生産に成功した。
